For the indicator of regular client contact:
- The number itself (contact every 6 months) does not tell you much about the quality of attorney-client contact in your jurisdiction. Although attorneys mostly meeting with clients in court may raise a red flag, more data is needed here, such as:
- Does the youth understand the attorney’s role?
- Does the attorney understand the youth’s needs, opinions, desires, interests, strengths, and challenges?
- How else does the attorney contact the youth and how often?
For the indicator of in-court advocacy:
- Again, there is not enough data here to fully assess attorney practices on this indicator, even though there are some red flags (attorney position almost always aligned with the government in hearings and at trial; attorney never introduced their own witness or exhibit at trial; attorneys only limitedly raised reasonable efforts arguments) and some potential positives (attorneys filed motions and questioned witnesses in the majority of cases; youth attended three-quarters of hearings).
